Expecting the best of others and praising their achievements was not just the long-ago practice of a small-town group of visionaries. It must be practiced wherever we live, where we work and where we play. We must look for ways to lift the sights of those who feel downcast, and we must remember to extend words of encouragement and praise when fellow workers, students, volunteers, or teammates have done well.

This is especially important if the accomplishment seems modest but contributes to the building of a good, productive community. Small acts of community-building can be of immense value. For example, I remember, during the voter registration drives of the early 1960’s, the talk about the plan to care for the children of the sharecroppers. The plan was simply to provide at least one hot meal to their young children. This seemingly small concern and accommodation over the years would lead to a comprehensive program in the Mississippi Delta, one we now know as Project Head Start.

Part of the essential fabric of community is having high expectations for each other. We needed them in Glen Allan when I was growing up. And all of us need them now.
